Winter tyre check: when to change, what to look for
In Austria, the situational winter tyre requirement applies from 1 November to 15 April: in winter road conditions, winter tyres must be fitted to all wheels. Those who change too late risk not only fines but, above all, a significantly longer braking distance.
Tread depth: 4 mm is the limit
The legal minimum tread depth is 4 mm for radial tyres. It is advisable to change earlier, however – below 4 mm winter tyres noticeably lose grip on snow and slush.
Age and storage
Tyres older than six years should be replaced regardless of tread. You will find the production date in the DOT number on the sidewall: the last four digits indicate the calendar week and year.
- Store tyres in a cool, dry, dark place
- Stack lying flat or hang when on rims; store upright without rims
- Clean before storing and mark positions (FL, FR, RL, RR)
- Check air pressure when refitting – also with tyre pressure monitoring systems
„The best tyre is the one that suits the vehicle and the driving style – not the most expensive one.“
